Is Claude Code free? What it really costs, in dollars and rupees

This is one of the first questions people ask me before they start building AI Employees. It deserves a straight answer with the numbers, because a hidden cost is the fastest way to feel cheated. So here is everything, checked on 26 October 2026.

Is Claude Code free to use?

No. Anthropic's setup guide says it plainly: "Claude Code requires a Pro, Max, Team, Enterprise, or Console account. The free claude.ai plan does not include Claude Code access." Source: Claude Code docs. The feature table on claude.com/pricing also marks Claude Code as "No" for the free plan.

What is free: downloading and installing it. The Claude desktop app, which lets you use Claude Code without the black terminal window, is also free to download. You only pay when you log in to use it.

How much does each Claude plan cost?

These are Anthropic's dollar prices from claude.com/pricing, checked on 26 October 2026. The rupee column is my own rough conversion at Rs 95 to the dollar, before GST and bank charges.

What does Claude Pro cost in India, in rupees?

In July 2026, Anthropic started showing Indian users prices in rupees. Reports differ a little, so here are two:

• Business Today, 14 July 2026: Pro "starts at Rs 2,000" a month, Max starts at Rs 11,999 a month, and Team starts at Rs 2,399 per user a month. It says "these listed prices include GST and other local taxes." Source: Business Today

My reading: Rs 2,033.05 plus 18 percent GST comes to about Rs 2,399 a month if you pay monthly, and the Rs 2,000 figure is likely the starting price on yearly billing. I could not confirm that from Anthropic itself, so the safe advice is: open Claude's upgrade page in your account and read the rupee price it shows you.

What about using Claude Code with an API account?

Claude Code also works with a Console account, which is Anthropic's pay as you go account for developers. You pay for how much you use, not a fixed monthly fee. For a beginner I do not recommend it: a busy day can cost more than a month of Pro, and it is harder to predict. A fixed plan is easier to plan for.

Which plan do I actually need?

• Just trying Claude: the free plan is fine for chatting and practising clear instructions. You cannot use Claude Code on it.
• Building your first AI Employees: Pro. This is what most people start with, and what I recommend for the 7 Day Challenge.
• Running many AI Employees all day: you may hit Pro's usage limits. That is when Max makes sense. Move up only when you actually hit the limits.
• A company with a team: Team plan, so each person has a seat and the admin controls.

Is Claude Pro worth Rs 2,000 a month?

Compare it with what it replaces. A junior assistant in India costs roughly Rs 20,000 to Rs 35,000 a month in base pay, from Payscale India averages. An AI Employee built on Claude does not do a whole job, and it needs you to check it. But for repeated work like research, drafts, reports and sorting, it can take hours off your week for about a tenth of one salary. It takes no salary, needs no hiring or training, and does not leave. The honest catch: the plan is only worth it if you build something with it. Paying for Pro and only chatting is the expensive way to use AI.

What do I need besides the plan?

• A computer. Anthropic lists macOS 13 or newer, Windows 10 (version 1809) or newer, or Ubuntu 20.04 or newer, with at least 4 GB of RAM, in the setup docs.
• An internet connection.
• VS Code, if you like. It is free. In AI Gurukul we use Claude Code inside VS Code, because you can see every file your AI Employee is made of.

How do I save money on Claude?

• Pay yearly once you are sure. Pro yearly was USD 17 a month instead of USD 20 when checked.
• Start on Pro, not Max. Upgrade only when you keep hitting limits.
• Practise on the free plan first. Write your instructions in the free chat, then pay when you are ready to build.
• Keep jobs focused. One clear job per AI Employee uses less than one giant do-everything setup.
