What is a Claude skill? Your first one in 20 minutes
A Claude skill is a saved set of instructions for one job. Claude reads its short description, and when your request matches, it follows the steps inside. You teach the job once, and from then on one line starts it.
To make your first one without coding: switch on "Code execution and file creation" in Settings, Capabilities, then ask Claude to use its skill-creator to help you build a skill for one job you repeat. Test it on real work and fix it. Anthropic's pages differ on whether custom skills need a paid plan, so plan on Claude Pro, about USD 20 a month billed monthly when checked on 24 October 2026.
Teach once, and it repeats forever. That is the whole reason skills exist.
Think about the jobs you explain to Claude again and again. "Sort these emails, but put anything from these clients first, and keep it to seven lines." A skill saves that explanation, with the steps and the examples, so you never type it again. This article shows you what a skill is and how to make your first one, in about 20 minutes, without writing code.
What is a Claude skill, in plain words?
A skill is a small folder that holds instructions for one job. The main file in it is called skill.md. At the top of that file are two short lines: a name, and a description of what the skill does and when to use it. Below that are the steps. A skill can also hold example files.
The description matters most. Anthropic's guide says Claude uses it to decide when to use the skill. Anthropic's limits, when I checked: the name up to 64 characters, the description up to 200.
How is a skill different from Project instructions?
Project instructions tell Claude about you and your work, in every chat in that Project. A skill teaches Claude one job, and it is used only when that job comes up. I think of it like this: the Project is what a new employee knows about your company, and a skill is one task they were trained to do.
If you have not made a Project yet, start there: how to give Claude a memory of your work.
Which plan do you need for Claude Skills?
Anthropic's help page says Skills are available on Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans. One of Anthropic's own guides says custom skills in Claude.ai need a paid plan. Because the two pages disagree, I plan on Claude Pro, which was USD 20 a month billed monthly on claude.com/pricing on 24 October 2026.
On every plan, one setting must be on: "Code execution and file creation" under Settings, Capabilities. On newer screens it may be called "Create and edit files".
How do you make your first skill, step by step?
- Pick one job you have already done with Claude. Not a new one. A job where you know what a good result looks like.
- Switch on the setting above, if it is off.
- Ask for skill-creator. In a chat, type: "Use the skill-creator skill to help me build a skill for this job: [describe the job]." Anthropic describes skill-creator as a helper that "asks clarifying questions, suggests description improvements, and helps format instructions properly."
- Answer its questions honestly. What starts the job, what it should read, what the result looks like, what it must never do.
- Read what it made. Check the description first. Does it say clearly when to use this skill? Then check the steps.
- Save it. Claude may offer to save the skill for you. If you have it as a file instead, go to Customize, then Skills, press +, choose "Upload a skill", and upload the skill folder as a ZIP file.
- Test it. Start a new chat and ask for the job in one line. Did it use the skill? Was the result right?
If you cannot find skill-creator, ask Claude: "Write a skill.md file for this job, with a name and a description at the top, and put it in a folder I can upload." Menus change often, so if a button is not where I said, ask Claude where it is.
Is there a way to make a skill by showing Claude?
Yes, on some setups. Anthropic's help page describes "Record a skill": you record your screen while you do the task, and Claude proposes a skill from it. When I checked, it was only in Cowork in Claude for Mac, on Pro, Max and Team plans, and not in chat, on Windows, or on the Free plan. Do not type passwords or show private details while recording, because everything on screen is captured.
What makes a good first skill?
- One job. "Write my morning brief", not "help with my work".
- A clear trigger. The description says exactly when to use it.
- A clear result. "Seven lines, most urgent first, one line each."
- An example. One good past result, so Claude can see what you mean.
- A never do list. Never send, never delete, never guess a number.
What can go wrong with a skill?
- Claude does not use it. Usually the description is too vague. Make it say when, in plain words.
- Claude uses it at the wrong time. The description is too wide. Narrow it.
- The result is right once and wrong the next time. The steps leave room for guessing. Add the rule that was missing. Then test 10 times, as in how to test an AI before you trust it.
- A skill from a stranger. Only use skills from people you trust, and read them first. A skill tells Claude what to do.
What comes after your first skill?
In the 7 day challenge, this is Day 3, teach it a job, and the first skill is the morning brief for your AI Personal Assistant.
Give it hands, so it can read your email or calendar: see how to build an AI email assistant for Gmail that only reads. Then put it on a timer: how to make Claude work every morning without you. The full path is in how to build an AI Employee in 7 days with Claude.
Questions people ask about Claude skills
Do I need to code to make a Claude skill?
No. You describe the job in plain English and Claude's skill-creator helps you shape the skill. You read and fix the result in plain English too.
What is skill.md?
It is the main file in a skill's folder. It starts with a name and a description, which tell Claude what the skill is and when to use it, followed by the steps for the job.
Are Claude Skills free?
Anthropic's help page lists Skills on the Free plan, but another Anthropic guide says custom skills in Claude.ai need a paid plan. To be safe, plan on Claude Pro, about USD 20 a month billed monthly when checked on 24 October 2026.
Why is Claude not using my skill?
Most often the description is too vague, so Claude cannot tell that your request matches. Rewrite it to say clearly what the skill does and when to use it. Also check that the skill is switched on in your skills list.
Can I use a skill someone else made?
Yes, but only from people you trust, and read it first. A skill gives Claude instructions, so a bad one can make Claude do things you did not want.
